The Only Brown Deaf Man in England

A Mercury Original in association with Camden People’s Theatre and in collaboration with Fuse TheatreWritten by and starring Nadeem IslamDirected by Harry JardineMovement Direction and Choreography by Chris FonsecaFrom 1970s Bangladesh to Brick Lane to the post-9/11 present, The Only Brown Deaf Man in England follows Rajkumar, a Deaf Bengali amateur batsman, as he navigates the chaos, comedy and contradictions of life in Britain – one ball at a time.Fleeing genocide, dodging racists, losing loved ones, and somehow finding laughter in it all, Rajkumar plays each moment like a batsman at the crease – reading the spin, riding the bounce, and swinging when it counts. His story is funny, fierce, and deeply moving.Told through a dynamic blend of British Sign Language and visual vernacular, the show transforms memory into vivid, cinematic storytelling – where whole worlds are built through the body, rhythm and imagination. It’s bold, inventive and visually striking, offering a rich theatrical experience for Deaf and hearing audiences alike. No prior knowledge of BSL is needed – the storytelling is immediate, intuitive, and universally felt.Following its early sharing at Camden People’s Theatre, a three-week development at National Theatre Studios and a sold-out work-in-progress at Pleasance Theatre, the full production is finally here!Accessibility and Content to ConsiderThis age guidance for this show is 14+. It's A Wonderful Life

Welcome to Bedford Falls! Christmas Eve, 1945… George Bailey, a down-on-his-luck banker believes life has passed him by, and he’s at the end of his rope. But when his guardian angel, Clarence, appears, George is astounded to witness what life could be like without all of the good deeds he’s done. Maybe it’s a wonderful life, after all? Inspired by the 1946 Frank Capra film of the same name, Old Fruit Jar Productions’ enchanting adaptation returns to Liverpool’s Royal Court for it’s third time running. This feel-good story is a great example of just how valuable the gift of life is, and how large of an impact even one person can have on the lives of so many others. Written by Mary Elliott Nelson Directed by Alex King Produced by Old Fruit Jar Productions and Liverpool’s Royal Court. “A joyous watch!” – North West End “Moving, magical, and incredibly heart-warming!” – The Broken Spine “Takes a story that is already magical and moving, and turns it into something shared and wonderfully alive!” – Adventures in Theatreland “You will not leave feeling anything short of wonderful!” – Stagey Reviews ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ - Liverpool Echo ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ - North West End ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ - The Broken Spine ★ ★ ★ ★ - Stagey Reviews ★ ★ ★ ★ - Arts City Liverpool ★ ★ ★ ★ - Adventures In Theatreland
