London Hughes: To Catch a D*ck

Hannah Crofts Review by Hannah Crofts 5 Published: 17 Aug 2019 Pleasance Courtyard Show Dates: 31 Jul 2019-25 Aug 2019

Beyoncé’s Diva is blasting out as we wait for London Hughes to arrive. After a short while she makes a very London-esque entrance, bouncing into the tiny attic room at Pleasance Courtyard and filling it with her electric energy. The kind of energy you’d need to fill a venue 10 times this one. She dives straight into her filth-filled set, making it crystal clear To Catch A D*ck is 100% about dicks and all the ones she’s ‘caught’ (although if her grandma asks, it's called To Catch A Richard, okay?).

An hour of raunchy and risqué tales that will leave you crying with laughter.

From the guy with a foot fetish to the mega-rich guy with the Ferrari who keeled over mid-date, Hughes takes us through the mixed bag of her sexual and dating history which is as hilarious as it is captivating. She’s flirty, thirty and single, and according to her mother, needs to settle down. But as Hughes observes, unlike male comics who have women swooning at their every word, the fact she’s a female comedian can be a bit of a cock-block with men finding her rather intimidating.

“APPARENTLY I’M TOO MUCH, GUYS!” she announces with such force her words vibrate around the room, potentially deafening everyone in a five-mile radius.

Hughes is making a good point though, as she denounces the double standards between funny men who are treated like gods (even ones who tell 'basic AF' jokes) and funny, confident women who are seen as off-putting. She moans how she is consequently reduced to dating ‘civilians’. Weaving sharp observations with wit, Hughes is at the top of her game. The way she’s able to command the room and create an atmosphere akin to being round your best mate's house is masterful.

Expect audience interaction as she designates one person to be the “moral compass white guy” whose job it is to put his hand up and interject if it all gets too much. This is an hour of raunchy and risqué tales that will leave you crying with laughter; it's certainly not for 'prude-y Judy's' as Hughes puts it herself.

I'd advise you to go watch To Catch A D*ck but as she says on Twitter, she's sold out babes, so unless you’ve already bought a ticket then bad luck. Pencil her in for next year though and pray she gets commissioned for a Netflix series. This woman is a comedy genius and I'm certain it won't be long before London Hughes is a household name.
