Colored Silk - A Civil War Odyssey

From the United States comes a passionate portrait of Elizabeth Keckley, the first African-American fashion designer, a former slave and Mary Todd Lincoln's personal seamstress. A powerful journey from chains to freedom.Meet Elizabeth Keckley, the first African-American fashion designer in US history: White House seamstress to First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln during the American Civil War. It's 1883, and Madame Keckley is “closing up shop,” ready to expand on her real-life 1868 memoir—the source material for Colored Silk , the powerful monologue written by and starring Tami Tyree. Born into slavery in 1818, “Lizzie” was gifted with an extraordinary talent for sewing. In Colored Silk , audiences follow her turbulent journey from South to North, reliving the horrors of slavery, celebrating emancipation, and witnessing her rise as a mother, lover, and businesswoman in late-19th-century Washington, D.C. The show debuted Off-Broadway in 2023 and was called “a masterful solo performance” by Broadway producer Ken Davenport. Tami Tyree is nominated for Best Solo Performance at the 2024 AUDELCO Theatre Awards.
