Kick It!

William Potter Review by William Potter 5 Published: 28 Jul 2013 Show Dates: 31 Dec 1969-31 Dec 1969

There has been a lot of comedy this year at IYAF, but for children 'Kick it!' has scored as the funniest.

There was nothing I could say was wrong with the performance.

'Kick it!' gives us an insight into the lives of a family where the mother has returned from a trip to the find her son and husband have been behaving like slobs. The cast of Bean Brown, Steve Dorsett and Helen Albert are all different ages but still manage to work together in this gloriously funny piece.

The company used simple comedic lines, an amusingly realistic set, and a hilarious but painfully familiar story. One thing that I found interesting was that they ate food and opened fizzing drinks live on stage. Another thing that they did which hasn't been done much on IYAF was that they started performing before the audience arrived. Of course they didn't begin the actual action before the viewers came, but they acted like a real father and son in a house: the dad singing along to some old hits which got everyone laughing. Meanwhile, the child is playing video games.

Using genuine items as props they added an extra layer of realism which is hard to achieve in theatre. It really felt like I had witnessed a real family argument in a real family home.

There was nothing I could say was wrong with the performance. The actors seemed slick and professional and the script was a comedy masterpiece able to rival any televised sitcom. The only improvement would be to make the whole thing longer as I would have loved to see another ten minutes or so of the fabulous company.

The Blurb:

HSA (Helen’s School of Acting) provides exciting, creative drama tuition. Director/writer Helen Albert has performed in the West End and Rose Theatre, Kingston. Beau Brown (aged 7) is one of Helen’s students and performs in  Kick It , alongside two others. Kick It!  is a comedy set inside the home of the Uptons. It’s about mum, dad and their 8 year old son Tom. While mum has been away for a week, dad and son have been left to their own devices - creating a more ‘relaxed’ style of living. Written & directed by Helen Albert
