I Would: A Hypothetical Sketch Show

Jessica Sydney-Leigh Review by Jessica Sydney-Leigh 4 Published: 1 Sep 2015 Gilded Balloon Show Dates: 5 Aug 2015-31 Aug 2015

This sketch show offers an hour of clean-cut and well-rehearsed comedy. Tidy punchlines and stylish delivery make for a lean performance, and the 30 short sketches showcase the intelligence and versatility of the actors. The three-handed show boasts talent from Catriona Stirling, Georgia Wagstaff and David Matthews, who have a fun and fluid chemistry on stage.

A tidy gem that showcases the potential of this young company.

Much of the comedy stems from parodies of familiar characters: Chelsea toffs, Enid Blyton kids, and Harry Potter geeks. Imagination manifests itself in an absurd dating show that showcases various types of milk in a ‘blind date’ format with an audience member, and another volunteer goes on a staged date that cleverly muddles her loves and hates in a personalised script. The cast are well-versed in audience participation, confidently pulling humour from awkward responses.

Naughtiness resides in a misunderstanding when David Matthews undergoes a ‘nose-job’; Georgia Wagstaff is an erotic novelist-cum-interior designer who manages to make plumbing sexy; Catriona Stirling is cute as a button as she attempts to apply lipstick whilst tackling a sneezing fit. The show culminates in a clever strip tease which reveals the cheeky flare of the trio.

A fun hour of variation and clever puns makes this show a winner. Never hysterical, always amusing; this show doesn’t aspire to the unravelled chaos of other improvised sketch shows at the Fringe. No Mean Feet have created a tidy gem that showcases the potential of this young company.
