MOTHERTONGUE

The Hope Theatre Show Dates: 15 Jun 2026-17 Jun 2026

'I want to keep all your things. Le piccole cose che fai. I caught myself doing it the other day. I’ll click my tongue at people when I’m annoyed, say things the way you would say them or roll my letters to replicate your voice. Voglio tutte le tue cose.’Florence has just moved to Italy to train as a teacher—but she wasn’t expecting such a difficult student. Laura desperately needs to learn English for work—but she wasn’t expecting such a hot teacher. As they begin a series of lessons together, they might just fall in love a little bit.Through miscommunication and misspellings, bad grammar and hand gestures, they begin to learn—and unlearn—working out when to stop talking and when to let the silence speak. But when everything has been said and every mistake has been made, what parts of themselves can they give for the other to keep—and what parts remain forever untranslatable?Part of BokFest 2026Running time: Approximately 65 minutesLATECOMERS MAY NOT BE ADMITTED.UNDER 18s ARE NOT PERMITTED INTO THE THEATRE FOR THIS PERFORMANCE.No re-admittance once the performance has commenced.
