Barry And Stuart: Part-Time Warlocks

Gill Smith Review by Gill Smith 3 Published: 13 Aug 2008 Show Dates: 31 Dec 1969-31 Dec 1969

The show’s title gives little away, so when an electronic voice counts up the percentage complete, this looks likely to go geeky. The pair explain the ‘part-time warlocks’ title as between that and magic, they understand all the mysteries of the universe.

Barry Jones and Stuart McCloud both clearly have plenty of illusion talent. Stuart can solve a Rubik’s Cube with a throw into the air. Barry can produce a bowling ball out of thin air. Other tricks include milk from paper, that’s turned into a £20 note, pulling an audience member’s mobile phone through Stuart, and mind-power drawing.

This is a fun, enjoyable show, with plenty of sleight of hand and silliness too. But the show lacks that little extra sparkle – whether from lack of a theme, little reincorporation for the audience’s sake, or simply a finale that seems less dramatic than the penultimate trick – needed to take this pair, one day, to a top star rating.
