Perhaps winning the award for most provocative title of the Fringe, A Girl Gets Naked In This is a series of nine monologues written and performed by women on the subject of sex and the various emotions, complexities, comedy, and trauma that can come with it.
Challenging and raw
The set is a messy bedroom with books strewn around the floor. Each of the performers takes the stage one by one to deliver their monologue. The subjects covered include obsessing over potential hidden kinks, older men seducing younger women, dealing with being sent violent porn by a misogynistic boss, the inherent danger in random hookups, violent fantasies, coming out, cheating, feminism vs horniness, and guys with mohawks. The speeches are all written by different writers so there’s a clear, distinct voice to each, but it’s in the performances that this piece shines. The nine actors deserve accolades as all are believable in their respective roles and each story, although written by another, feels like it could be their own personal experience. These are all ‘normal’ women dealing with the ‘normal’ day to day of navigating sex in our current society.
Some of the monologues are funnier than others, some are more thought-provoking, but each is challenging and raw in its own way. This is the type of theatre of which we need to be seeing more and People You Know Productions is certainly a company worth watching. As for the promised nudity, you’ll have to see the show to learn how that pays off.
