We are invited to a party. Sarah Campbell and Grainne Maguire are the hosts of this charming soiree, which combines stand up, retro cocktails, awkward party chat and that all too familiar end of night bravado where one tends to make a fool of oneself.
On entry the charming pair offer us the said cheese and pineapple on a stick, marking the beginning of a very cool, kitsch and retro party. Not dissimilar to what one may imagine the set of Abigail Party to look like with doilies, Hawaiian pictures and cocktail accessories littering the set. I'm ready for a knees up.
The party combines stand-up with chat and party treats, starting as many social gatherings do with classic pre-drink awkward conversation provided by Campbell, and various reluctant members of the audience. Grainne swiftly provides a lucky member of the audience with a camp cocktail complete with sparkler and umbrella, which heralds phase two of the ceremony - alcohol. The duo then ponder upon the consequences of any under-the-influence mistakes one may have embarked upon, which gets big laughs.
Campbell is confident, witty and wisecracking as one half of the party's hostessing duo, sharing some hilarious observations on real life magazines and branding amongst other musings. Maguire is equally as entertaining as a sweet party girl, and delights the audience. She amuses me as she speaks of her obsession for all things historical, paying particular attention to her favourite war: World War I. The wonderfully funny Andrew O'Neill makes a special guest appearance before joining us all for our obligatory party photo. There was however the odd anecdote that did go unappreciated as well as a drunken rap which felt a little awkward. However, the chemistry and contrasting personalities brought to the floor by Campbell and Maguire make for a cosy and unique comedy experience. Like the party snack the Cheese and Pineapple Club is retro, tacky and tons of fun. Take a bite.
