Russell Howard: Wandering

Russell Howard has been playing to packed houses down at the Pleasance Courtyard with his show ‘Wandering’. It’s a suitable title, Howard taking us on a wander through his material, responding well to the audience along the way.

This is stand up that almost everyone will enjoy. It’s not extending the genre, but it is performed with a charming, easygoing manner, a little like a chilled out Jason Byrne in style. His interaction with the audience is excellent, poking gentle fun without resorting to being insulting.

He performance is fresh and bouncy. He seems completely at home on stage and is clearly enjoying the show nearly as much as the audience is. This is not in-depth satire, but a look at the smaller things in life like his auntie’s house, his brother and his break up with his girlfriend. It is his ability to find humour and joy in these small things – his wanderings – that give him his comedy. It is hard to find fault, although at times it is a little hard to hear due to the way he uses the microphone, and the fact that the show is so busy, with audience on 3 sides.

A good bet for those looking for an hour of solid stand up comedy.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
