A brave attempt at something different, Foil, Arms and Hog flirted with comedy gold but their reliance on some cheap jokes and a few too many silly faces let them down. Although this is a very funny show, there are just too many faults for it to be outstanding. The show opened with a mimed car chase which segued into the first sketch, a drugs interrogation scene which lasted just a little too long. Like many of their sketches there was no real punchline and, after several increasingly weird developments, the end of the sketch was signalled by the hitting of a symbol. This Pythonesque style of sketch comedy is done well but is always going to have problems. The end result is a show full of good ideas but which feels bloated and over-cooked. The strongest sketches were the ones which manage to carry a more complete narrative such as a particularly good sketch about a sandcastle building competition. All three members of the cast gave strong performances. However they had an annoying tendency to overuse silly facial expressions and strange physicality. This left many jokes overplayed, detracting from the script.Despite these flaws the show is very funny. There were no dud sketches and some of the ideas were truly original and entertaining. With a few more punchlines and a few fewer silly faces this could be a really strong production.
