The young pianist Yuja Wang is indisputably a phenomenal virtuoso. She has also proven a sensitive and thoughtful artist. For this recital at Carnegie Hall she plays three Liszt transcriptions of Schubert songs to set the mood for Schubert's astonishing late Sonata in A. In the second half she offers lots of Scriabin and Balakirev's stunningly difficult "Islamey."
