Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have Peter Pan as your friend? Have you ever questioned what made the witch in Hansel and Gretel so inconsiderate? If you have, this show is for you. And even if you haven’t, you are in for a treat – of sweeties, if nothing else. Surrey University’s student company, Anthroperformic, have put together a magical session of story-telling. Aided by colourful scarves, quirky props, glitter and sweeties, this group of young, talented storytellers manage to transport the audience to a world of fairy tales – only their fairy tales often have an unconventional twist to them. The journey for us began when we joined the performers on stage. Not soon after we found ourselves assisting the storytellers in narrating the stories; helping out in creating the right ambiance for each of the stories, be it by creating waves by waving shawls for The Little Mermaid or cheering Peter Pan when he gets into a fight. We did leave feeling more than spectators. The show has been structured to make it feel spontaneous and unrehearsed, and it succeeds for the most part, except for the few moments when the performers struggle to engage with the audience. Having said that, they fit in their characters extremely well, and really do have an impressive knack for storytelling.
