Vladimir McTavish: A Scottish History of the World

Where better to hear about Scottish history and the current state of affairs than the SNP Club that becomes Stand II for the duration of the festival? Scottish comedy stalwart Vladimir returns to deliver his 3rd solo show that skilfully combines history lesson, polemic and fun. It is hard to fault the delivery and content.

There are lots of stand out moments, the sorts of things that get to the essence of feeling Scottish, the things that involve a feeling of both pride and shame. From the actions of have-a-go-hero John ‘Smeato’ Smeaton in the recent attack on Glasgow airport, to the idea of Irvine Welsh night replacing Burns night in St Andrew’s Clubs around the globe, the laughs and cringes come thick and fast.

If you’ve just pitched up in Scotland for the fringe, you’ll be treated to important lessons on Scottish history and the Scottish psyche; if you’ve spent the best part of your life here you will recognise, smile, laugh and wonder if we can ever change. The show is perfect for its early evening slot and Vladimir is warm and engaging, slotting in something of a personal journey alongside the comedy.

From Paisley to the Highland Clearances; from booze & drugs to pork smuggling, this is intelligent stuff, and well worth booking a ticket for.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
