Vittorio Angelone: Who Do You Think You Are? I Am!

The guy is back in Vittorio Angelone’s Who Am I? I Am!; an in depth exploration of self-identity and perception, whilst being cautiously celebratory in its ownership. Angelone builds on his previous show about identity and resilience this year, by exploring more in-depth his relation to the world.

Takes incredible risks with his comedy which shows such dexterity and trust in us as an audience

Angelone toes the line between edgy and offensive very well, and he shows a great degree of maturity in how he approaches his jokes and punchlines. He pushes, that much we can tell but at no point does he cause harm with the jokes that he tells, but in fact uses his style and material to begin a wider conversation about context and intent, and the nuances that many people ignore. Angelone takes incredible risks with his comedy which shows such dexterity and trust in us as an audience, establishing a nice dialogue and general atmosphere in the room. In this manner he tackles the excitement he felt during Euros 2022 whilst being an Italy supporter in London, men’s mental health as part of his own self-reflection, providing the occasional commentary on his jokes as he goes along.

In Who Am I? I Am!, he comes across as incredibly confident and relaxed – which he tells us has bitten him in the past – but it's not arrogance, another example of how Angelone toes the line that he so cleverly walks. There is a little bit of well-deserved triumph, and it may partly come from the fact Angelone performs his show in a way that makes it clear that he’s having fun; he is enjoying himself onstage in a way that makes us enjoy it more as well. He doesn't shy away from anything, whether it's in his material or punchlines, which comes across in how forefront he is when describing his experiences.

This hour is brought full circle, as Angelone takes every opportunity he can to fully embrace irony along his tightrope walk. This show is not for the faint-hearted or quick to offend, as it requires a degree of darkness to see just how clever Angelone’s comedy is.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Blurb

Following his five-star, sold-out, award-nominated debut show in 2022, Vittorio Angelone returns to the Fringe in 2023 with his difficult second album. After solving all the problems in the world with his first hour, his new show looks inward to who he thinks he is, who other comedians think he is, who you think he is and the truth that lies somewhere in between those three. 'Vittorio is the greatest comedian I’ve ever seen, undeniably the voice of his generation' (Skinny). 'Gay' (Brian Logan, Guardian).
