UNCANNY BODIES: LIFE DRAWING AT THE VAGINA MUSEUM
  • UK Regional & Tours

PLEASE NOTE - This is a HYBRID event, meaning that we will have a limited amount of IRL tickets at the Vagina Museum, but it will also be livestreamed via zoom. The class will be recorded and you will have 7 days access to the recording after the session no matter which ticket you bought (irl or hybrid). In a brand new collaboration with the Vagina Museum, Artists Luisa-Maria MacCormack and Lily Holder present a unique drawing class exploring the nature of the 'Uncanny' body. For this session, our incredible model Lily will be posing in, around, within, and alongside simple soft sculptures created by Luisa. Made of low-fi materials such as tights, fake hair and cotton gloves, the sculptures mimic the body, but their floppy legs and oversized hands ultimately offer us a glimpse into the 'uncanny'. Lily will explore poses collaboratively with Luisas soft sculptures, offering a mixed corporeal/uncanny drawing experience for students to interpret. Inspired by the soft sculpture practices of Artists such as Dorothea Tanning, Louise Bourgeois and the drawings of Hans Bellmer, this class will be dedicated to an exploration of how soft sculpture can be incorporated into a drawing practice, exploring its unique abilities to mimic, distort and compliment the human body. Throughout class, Luisa will offer a short explanation of the concept of the 'uncanny', and explore examples of artists whose work has hinged on the uncanny body'. From Francis Bacon to Bellmer, Dorothea Tanning or contemporary artists like Christina Quarles. Exploring the history of artists whose works has challenged conventional perceptions of the body, emphasising distortion and transformation as means of expression. This drawing class represents a unique opportunity for students to explore the intersection of sculpture and drawing, as well as the complexities of human anatomy and transformation. Everyone is welcome to join this pay-what-you-can class. We suggest a payment of 20, however we understand that may not be possible for everybody. Please be honest and pay what you can afford so that we may continue to offer our sessions on a pay-what-you-can basis whilst also paying our guest tutors and models a sustainable wage. YOU WILL NEED: - Paper, we recommend A3 and above to allow for expressive, flowing lines. - Something to draw with! We love charcoal but you can also experiment with pencils, pen, soft pastels, oil pastels etc - whatever you have in your home! ETIQUETTE: Online Life Drawing is a fairly new medium for us all and our priority is keeping our life models safe and comfortable whilst working online. The majority of our life models will be working semi-clothed, however, occasionally a model may feel more comfortable to perform their job nude. If it is important for you to know this information in advance of the class, please drop us an email. Please note that taking screenshots, recordings, or reference images during class is not permitted or appropriate. This class is suitable for ALL LEVELS Your ticket includes access to the live class and 7 days access to the recording. RECORDING The recording will be sent out after the event finishes, within 2 hours of the end of the class. Please add [email protected] to your email contacts to ensure you receive the recording as expected. (Please note that the recording can be viewed once within 7 days) ABOUT OUR TUTORS Luisa-Maria MacCormack is an artist, educator and public speaker currently working in London. Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
