With the war raging in Ukraine and its various implication on civil society we are investigating how the war and the new conditions have impacted LGBTQ+ Communities in Ukraine.
Since the fall of the Soviet Union and Ukrain's independence in 1991, the
Ukrainian LGBT community has gradually become more visible and more organized
politically, organising several LGBT events in Kiew, Odessa, Kharkiv, and
Kryvyi Rih. Despite the fact that same-sex sexual activity between consenting
adults is legal in Ukraine, prevailing social attitudes are often intolerant
of LGBT communities. Events and Organisationas have therefore on occasion
been marred by violent attacks by nationalist groups.
We are investigating how the war introduced new dynamics into the lived
experience and, although the process of political formation has been
violently disrupted, may have created new opportunities to explore.
