TRANSMISSIONS PRESENTS: Showgirls
  • London Fringe

On night three of our Problematic Faves season, get ready to go big or go home.

Dutch auteur Paul Verhoeven's controversial masterpiece Showgirls (1995) was panned by audiences and critics alike upon first release, and generally denounced as a disaster for its failure to catapult NC-17 rated films into commercial viability as planned.
But since then, the passage of time and the passion of those with good taste has led to it being considered among the most elite of cult classics, screening over and over again to packed audiences worldwide who keep coming back for the sleazy, incisive appeal of Verhoeven's thesis on the American Dream.
We've been waiting for just the right time to screen this one at Transmissions, and it's finally here.
Elizabeth Berkley makes a career-halting turn as unpredictable dancer Nomi Malone who hitchhikes to Vegas with stars in her eyes, and takes a job stripping before finding her way into the shimmering, cutthroat world of the showgirls in a big budget stage production.
But it'll take more than her "natural talent" to get to the top, and things get even more complicated when she finds herself caught in the middle of the erotic scheming of a charming producer (Kyle McLachlan) and his girlfriend (Gina Gershon).

Come find us downstairs at Dalston Superstore for a celebration of one of cinema's most singular achievements.

You can't touch me, but I can touch you. I'd really like to touch you

Be advised that this film features sexual assault.
Subtitles will be displayed throughout.
Seating is a mixture of backed chairs, benches, bar stools, and floor space, and is first come first served.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
