Tides
  • Camden Fringe

Tides... the intense waves of life constantly moving, in and out, up, and down, sometimes gentle, and other times big and overwhelming. We've all experienced immense highs and lows, right? Well try dealing with them when you're on the Autism Spectrum.Dylan Ward is autistic. He doesn't connect with people quite like how others can. He can't follow conventional norms in the way that is expected from him, he doesnt communicate in the same way, he has his own way of thinking, and his own way of doing things. Sadly, the rest of the world seems to not understand this. So how do you navigate a world which operates on a completely different wavelength to the one that youre on?A one person show based on the writer and performers real experiences of having and dealing with being on the autism spectrum, mixing movement, text, voice-overs, and combining heightened, Monty Pythonesque humour with a touch of real-world drama. Tides presents a story about identity and trying to figure out who you really are and who youre really meant to be.This is an insight into the world of at least one autistic individual... and the turbulence that they constantly face."Packed with humour and momentum... enormously engaging stage presence" - Reviews Hub."A deeply honest play... An understated and highly personal presentation of the complexities of autism" - British Theatre Guide."The energy of a stand-up comedian, the character versatility of a Shakespearean actor... Joe has excellent physical and vocal command of the stage " and audience concentration during this hour-long performance never falters... Dylan says that autism is his superpower. But for Joe Dennis, his superpower is clearly his talent to entertain" - Manchester Theatre Academy.Audience Feedback: "Brilliantly performed, exceptionally put together. Undoubtedly the best piece of modern theatre I've ever seen. 10/10"

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
