The Ugly One
  • London Fringe

'Profoundly moving, bitingly brutal and laugh-out-loud funny!' - Sally Cookson The Ugly One is a cautionary tale of identity and beauty vibrating with the energy of a pneumatic drill. Lette is an inventor and is on the cusp of delivering a major presentation that will change his career, but at the last minute he's told he can't go as there is something terribly 'wrong' with his face. In fact, he is so unspeakably ugly, that no one has ever thought to mention it. In desperation, Lette turns to a surgeon who offers him a drastic yet miraculous transformation. The result of Lette's operation pivots him into new spheres of fame and glory. But is it possible to become too beautiful? Shockingly absurd. Weirdly naughty. And explosively expressive. The Ugly One is 70 minutes of unapologetic hilarity as we watch one man's descent into darkness. 'This production is a rollercoaster of a theatre experience.' - LifeStyle 'There follows some delightfully witty direction here from Natalie Simone who turns the cast into preening, pouting sexy things' - StageTalk 'The satire, feels like a modern day cautionary fairy tale for right now. It is a thought-provoking piece of work from an expert team of cast and creatives' - Backstage Bristol 'A scathing takedown of the age of beauty given a confident staging in Natalie Simone's production' - Kris Hallett 'The Ugly One is the kind of show you don't get to see often these days. It is more naughty, weird and with more joie de vivre. Visually, thematically, and intellectually, the show celebrates theatre as an act of play.' - Tom Brennan, The Wardrobe Ensemble 'Natalie Simone's razor sharp production grabs the audience by the throat and doesn't loosen its grip until well after the performance has finished' - Sally Cookson Latecomers may not be admitted. Please arrive in good time for the start time of 19:45. Under 18s are not permitted into the theatre for this performance. No re-admittance once the performance has commenced. Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
