The Top Secret Comedy Club

Apparently not such a big secret after all, the Whistlebinkies was packed with those in the know waiting for a line-up of top comedians to kick start their night. With the comedians unknown until the day of the show you have to take your chances, but if you’re lucky like me you’ll be hearing some of the best new comedy at the Fringe. With the hilarious Pete Dobbing hosting the show and starting us off with the infamous line ‘when I was back-packing in Australia’ his brilliant anecdotes set the scene ready for the talented Stuart Goldsmith, Joel Dommett and Fin Taylor. Each brought their own style of comedy to the stage and all had us laughing equally as loud.

Stuart Goldsmith’s easy manner and slick links had us roaring at his take on the Glasgow accent and stories of his Gangster Granny, followed by Dommett, whose infectious energy cracked us up with some brilliant improvisations and scarily believable stories of a crazy flatmate and a ‘nostalgic mugging’. Finishing the set was Fin Taylor, the self-proclaimed youngster, whose serious demeanour was at odds with his hysterical descriptions of what happens when a child hits a swan and some very witty one-liners.

Look out for these names as all were performing separately in their own Fringe shows and have done their bit for the Top Secret Comedy Club. Who knows who’ll be on the stage tomorrow night? More importantly, who cares? All you need to remember is to be there ready and waiting to enjoy some top comedy at this gem of a free fringe show.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
