Experience moving African American spirituals in a collective listening experience presented by drummer, composer and educator Domo Branch.
Domo Branch is a rising star of the jazz world, performing alongside prominent artists such as Dianne Reeves and Wynton Marsalis. He presents a programme of recorded spirituals and live percussion to listen to in the relaxed atmosphere of The Hub, in the afternoon before his late-night performance.
Spirituals are religious folksongs that developed from enslaved people in the United States. These songs were a means for survival " a powerful example of endurance in the worst of conditions. Their influence can be felt across American music, from jazz to gospel, country, rock and roll and hip-hop.
The influence of spirituals also reaches across our programme, from Michael Tippetts choral work A Child of our Time to choreographer Alvin Ailey's Revelations.
