The Outrun - Relaxed Performance
  • Edinburgh International Festival

WORLD PREMIERE

A relaxed performance of Amy Liptrots bestselling memoir brought to life in an epic and elemental world premiere.

How this performance will be relaxed

A relaxed performance is for anyone who would benefit from a more informal setting.

The audience capacity will be reduced to limit the overwhelm that some people can experience in large crowds. During the show audiences are invited to move around and make noises in any way that makes them feel comfortable.

If you feel you may need to leave during the show, please choose an aisle seat or any seat in row L. A chill out space will be available outside the auditorium. Some sensory elements will be adapted to remove barriers for people with sensory sensitivities.

A visual story will be made available closer to the performance date and will be sent round to all bookers.

Non-relaxed performances of The Outrun run from 31 Jul " 24 Aug. Audio described, BSL interpreted and captioned performances are included in this run.

About the production

Olivier Award-winning playwright Stef Smith joins forces with Vicky Featherstone, former Artistic Director of the National Theatre of Scotland, to reimagine Amy Liptrots bestselling memoir. Edinburghs producing theatre The Lyceum returns to the International Festival to present this world premiere. A young woman finds herself washed up back home on the Scottish archipelago of Orkney. She has no idea how or if she can rebuild her life after a decade of addiction.

Flashing back and forth between Orkney and London, we get a glimpse into her former urban existence and its intoxicating temptations that pushed her to the point of destruction. She must find a way to navigate the alluring wildlife and wildness of both environments.

Smith's urgent retelling speaks to the impact of isolation and loneliness and " ultimately " the resilience of people.

A keepsake freesheet is available at the venue for this performance.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
