The Old Spice Boys make their debut on the Fringe with a fun show that will get your toes tapping to swing, jazz, reggae and blues rhythms.
Using ukulele, tea chest (one string) bass and snare drum they play original material and interpretations of work by various other artists from Miles Davis to Prince. All use their instruments to their maximum potential and rhythm is key throughout. It's amazing what Azo Bell does with a ukulele going beyond George Formby through Jango Rhinehart to BB King. Each member of the band has his own persona. There's the cool bassist, the talented and likeable ukulele player and the stage weary ringmaster on snare.
The music is great and their voices work well together but the comic asides add little to the performance and occasionally detract from it. The 6pm slot in the Spiegel is too sedate for this act and I would have preferred to see them whipping up a crowd in a late night bar. The band clearly enjoy themselves and maybe you will too.
