The Mysterious World of Clovis Van Darkhelm

Ever wondered if magic can really happen? Do ghosts exist? What actually is Anthropology? Clovis Van Darkhelm has some answers, though they may not be exactly what you were expecting. Dressed all in black, the amateur anthropologist and adventurer presents a lecture on humanity, describing indigenous people from around the world and how their collective forms of human experience differ from our own. Discussing the Ancient and Modern world, Van Darkhelm lets you into some secrets about our ancestry and even human society itself, attempting to make you rethink the scientific world you thought you knew.

Written and performed by Mike Hayley, in association with the Comedians' Theatre Company, the character of Clovis Van Darkhelm accurately embodies the eccentric adventurer, bringing a new spin to myths and legends. From the curses and deities of the Egyptians, to the very real threat of the Mongolian Death Worm, Van Darkhelm covers a lot of ground and if you are able to suspend your disbelief and not question his theories too deeply, he presents some unusual evidence.

From reading the show’s description, you will have a pretty good idea what kind of show The Mysterious World of Clovis Van Darkhelm is going to be. Full of not particularly original jokes about the spiritual world, his musings are reasonably entertaining and as free shows go, it’s probably worth the journey.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
