It is incredible how the Internet can expose and produce brand new superstars. This year at the Fringe, so many shows have arrived with the epithet attached of ‘the YouTube sensation’, and few shows are as deserving of the title as The Midnight Beast. Known for producing witty songs with catchy tunes and parodies of chart music, The Midnight Beast are a firm favourite and I was excited to see how they would do; as were, it transpires, the entire female adolescent population of Edinburgh. With a fan base as vocal and excitable as those seen in old concert footage of The Beatles, it would be easy for this act to forget about producing a good show and instead rest on their laurels. But The Midnight Beast did not do this for a second. Songs were updated and expanded, video interludes were projected so that costume changes did not feel slow, but instead flowed nicely from number to number, and dance routines were performed seamlessly. The band also proved that they are not a flash in the pan; as well as performing their wide catalogue of hit online songs, they also showed themselves to be talented musicians and singers as well as incredibly entertaining. The audience absolutely adored them and they played off this excitement excellently. Whilst never slackening the fast pace of the show they managed to involve the entire crowd in their performance. Whilst their music might not be everybody’s cup of tea by any means, due to its love of youthful references and a more techno sound, if you enjoy comedy songs or energetic gigs, The Midnight Beast are an act to check out. They deserve to be huge.
