Servitude entraps maids Claire and Solange who react with imitations of their mistresss power and control. Reality and fantasy become distorted and rituals become obsessive. They decide that the only way out is to be rid of their mistress through murder. Jean Genet may have written The Maids over 70 years ago but it retains a remarkable contemporary relevance surrounding the exploitation of servants. Genet resisted the law, hated the bourgeoisie and his heroes were outcasts. He turned the norm on its head in this play, where the maids were not walk-on parts but leading ladies.
