A comedy sketch show, promising 32 new and hilarious sketches in under an hour. Advertising yourself as a sell out show and telling us that last year you sold 7000 tickets is no small claim. And can 7000 people be wrong? Maybe, just this once…
Sadly, this show falls short from the very beginning. The main problem is that only a handful of the attempted jokes are funny. This is proven by the ratio of laughter compared to the relatively filled house. Sometimes jokes are met by the audience with a silent reaction and at other times they manage to achieve a slight giggle.
The dialogue is slightly redeemed on a couple of occasions by some strong visual comedy and the show is almost saved entirely by a hilarious sheep routine and a tap dance. The smooth operator gag is also a moment. But it cannot be ignored that these three minutes of wit and hilarity were paired up with another fifty minutes of dead jokes. Although they have tried to cut down the scene changeovers by minimising the set and props, and blaring out power ballads to distract us from the long periods of nothingness, the 30-second wait for a ten second gag becomes tiresome quickly.
Luckily for these guys they’ve been commissioned for a TV pilot where one can only hope they cut the Aerosmith blackouts in favour of quicker and punchier scripts with less interruptions. With any luck, some of the dead puns will also be left on the cutting room floor when the Ginge, Geordie and Geek make their BBC debut later this year.
