This show is billed as a comedian’s comedy show for comedians. Guests for the run have included The Boy With Tape on His Face, Alan Davies and Abandoman with Rhod Gilbert, Eddie Pepitone and Terry Alderton still to go. That night’s panel guests were the quick-witted and very funny Pappy’s.
The set up is simple, if peculiar for a Fringe Show. Stuart Goldsmith records his podcast and his studio audience are a paying audience. I struggle with the concept of why people would pay to go to a radio show that they download later for free. However, it is a good show and Goldsmith is the perfect host, throwing out questions as necessary and sitting patiently as we get an answer.
Online and in the Fringe Programme, booking tickets feels like a lucky dip - you’re never quite sure who you’ll get to see, but updated flyers floating around Gilded Balloon are making things easier for a picky punter and revealing some big names coming up towards the end of the run.
As one might expect the show will change based on the guests, but Goldsmith has secured a strong line up for every episode. Pappy’s were well-timed and clever as they mastered one microphone between the three of them and delivered clever anecdotes and tips to a crowd of budding comedians.
Whilst Comedian’s Comedian felt a bit like an hour-long advert for the Pappy’s show, it’s a funny advert that sells them well. Not only did they come across as funny, but we could see the intelligence behind clowning, comedy and sketch shows that is sometimes overlooked.
