That Canadian Guy

Glen Foster is ‘That Canadian Guy’ even in Canada apparently, where he’s been a headline stand-up for over twenty years, but he’s happy enough if you can’t remember his real name and just focus on the laughs.

In case you forget the Canadian bit, he’s the one down the front wearing a shirt plastered in maple leaves (which usefully also helps people not to mistake him for an American).

Performing in a converted conference room on the first floor of the Apex City hotel (watch out, there are two Apex hotels in the Grassmarket – make sure you get the City), he starts nicely by taking the mickey out of his surroundings.

It takes a few minutes to tune into the laid back comedy from this slightly more mature than usual comic, but it builds nicely and is worth hanging on in there for. A lot of his material is focussed on his sheer laziness, for example how much easier it is to lie on his couch than to do just about anything else. There’s some nice stuff too on the current terrorist threats as seen from a Canadian perspective (hey, no-one ever got blown up by lying on the couch).

All of this is delivered in an accent built for comedy – kind of a cross between Homer Simpson and Scotty from Star Trek. If you’re looking for some intelligent, well-honed observational comedy then Glen Foster is That Canadian Guy for you.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD

Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
