Workshop Aims:

The primary aim of this workshop is to equip secondary school educators and staff with the knowledge, tools, and strategies needed to create inclusive and supportive environments for trans, non-binary, and queer (TNBQ) young people. By focusing on understanding identities, fostering inclusivity within the curriculum, and addressing the unique challenges TNBQ students face, participants will be empowered to better support TNBQ students in their care.

Workshop Objectives:

Raise Awareness of TNBQ Identities: Provide participants with a clear understanding of TNBQ identities, the diversity within these groups, and the importance of respecting and affirming students' gender identities and expressions.Explore Intersectionality: Help participants understand how intersecting factors such as race, disability, and socio-economic background influence the experiences of TNBQ students.Develop Inclusive Practices: Equip participants with strategies to integrate TNBQ issues into the curriculum and foster a school environment that is safe and supportive for all students.Address Bullying and Discrimination: Offer practical approaches for preventing and addressing bullying, harassment, and discrimination against TNBQ students within the school setting.Provide Resources and Support: Signpost participants to relevant resources, support services, and professional development opportunities for further learning and support for TNBQ young people.

Workshop Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

Gain a deeper understanding of TNBQ identities and the varied experiences of TNBQ students within the school community.Be aware of the concept of intersectionality and how it affects TNBQ students, particularly those from marginalised communities.Feel confident in implementing inclusive curriculum strategies that reflect and celebrate gender diversity, as well as recognising TNBQ individuals in teaching materials and classroom discussions.Have practical tools and approaches to tackle bullying, harassment, and other forms of discrimination against TNBQ students, ensuring their safety and well-being.Be equipped with a list of resources and support services for ongoing professional development and guidance on supporting TNBQ students in their schools.Leave with actionable steps they can take to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for TNBQ students in their school.

This workshop provides a comprehensive overview of the key areas necessary to support TNBQ young people, with a balance of theoretical knowledge and practical application to empower educators and staff in fostering inclusive school communities.
