A filthy student in an untidy room reflecting on how his life has gone off the rails. With bad advice from his father, he never learnt to face up to his demons or take a difficult path. After his flatmate began going out with a woman he loved, he fell apart. He hides away in his bed-sit, hardly eating, urinating in the sink and writing futile love letters for his eyes only. Even when his flatmate tries to help him he hides his pent up rage. Finally his alter ego comes out of his closet, a vicious monster of his Id that tries to make him take control through aggression. At a pivotal crossroad in his life this is a crucial conflict that faces to tear him apart, the struggle to keep his sanity or lose control. The script is very accomplished as we see inside the mind of the madman. There are many internal conflicts and issues which are brought to our attention. These look at what point someone will start to lose control of their sanity, what causes this and how someone in his position would view the world around him. The idea of having a guiding alter-ego is so commonly used it needs a lot to be special, but the script succeeded in producing this to great effect. The physical embodiment of the students pent up rage can be imagined to disappear at any point, however his need to get a grip on life quickly forces him to invest his faith in a dangerous side to his mentality. A good play that allowed easy access to considering difficult issues of mentality. The performance that portrayed the students aggressive and primordial self was lacking, as he failed to fly completely off the handle. He was aware of himself onstage so didnt effectively portray the loose cannon he was meant to be. A hard hitting and highly emotional script with a powerful ending that makes you think.
