Sikisa: Hear Me Out

Sikisa’s Hear Me Out is a wonderful hour of stand-up that raises the roof with material that leaves you with a smile on your face and a spring in your step.

Sikisa’s sharp and candid style makes her a joy to watch on stage

Having had a tough 2022, Sikisa wanted things to be different this year. She strove to be more honest, which is certainly what her show delivers. Opening up about her dyslexia and experiences struggling at school, Sikisa delivers a performance that is riotously frank and entertaining.

Sikisa’s sharp and candid style makes her a joy to watch on stage, breathing fresh air into pithy one-liners as she teases the audience. Many comedians break the ice by getting to know the crowd which often runs the risk of becoming an awkward ten minutes we would have rather not endured; however, Sikisa does this with ease, charming the audience and making us eagerly anticipate what she has in store.

Some of her best material uses puns, observational humour and storytelling to play on her dyslexia and the obstacles that arise as a result. The first twenty minutes have incredible pacing and momentum, which allows her commentary on tween emo culture to vividly resonate with the audience. As with many comics, the middle section of the show seemed to lag sightly, which is also where Sikisa introduced more earnest periods of storytelling. It would be a mistake to undermine the importance of these moments, which grounded her material in a heartfelt narrative. Thus, the drop in energy is most likely a structuring issue, which could be amended with ease.

Nevertheless, Sikisa’s expert comic timing and joyful energy offsets this, and her cheeky approach to sex and relationships makes the audience cry with laughter. What is lovely about Hear Me Out is the message that is subtly woven through the piece: we can all find our superpowers that allow us to overcome life’s hurdles. Sikisa’s inspired finale is empowering. She delights the audience and injects an invigorating atmosphere in the room. I won’t spoil it for you, but you must believe me when I say it’s fabulous.

Hear Me Out is a fantastic show that gives ‘traditional’ stand-up a new lease of life.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
