Spectacle, danger, resistance, leopard print, ectoplasm. From Olivier award-winning Marisa Carnesky comes the untold herstory of working-class entertainment from immigrant, queer, activist and occult voices. Showwomen compares 1940s magicienne Koringa,1930s clown Lulu Adams,1920s dare-devil Marjorie Dare and 1880s aerialist Miss La La to experiences of performers today. Marisa performs with hair hanger Fancy Chance, sword performer Livia Kojo Alour and fire artist Lucifire, mixing archival footage with death-defying and taboo-breaking acts, political resistance and secret backstage rituals. Expect naked crocodile women scaling walls, ladders of swords, live hair hanging, and ectoplasmic clowns. Showwomen channels entertainment heritage to create matriarchal performance futures. Featuring an original commissioned soundtrack by James Johnston (Gallon Drunk, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey), Kath Warg (Snowpony, Stereolab) and Dave Knight (Danielle Dax, Unicazurn)
