Shazia Mirza is a rare breed. She is a Muslim female stand-up comic originating from Birmingham. She achieved fame and notoriety as a comedienne after 9/11 by being brave and outspoken enough to muster comedy out of what was, at the time, a terrifying and taboo subject. Nowadays this subject is common ground but her sheer talent has kept her going and she is as good if not better than ever.
The show began with some quick and impressive ad-libbing with the audience. She has the most wonderfully infectious smile that lights up the whole room. Being completely at home on the stage, Mirza had everyone relaxed and laughing within seconds. Her mind races faster than her lips can move as she delivers deadpan comedy with ease and precision. She has an acute self awareness and speaks candidly of her struggles with cultural expectations and responsibilities. Mirza has not had an easy time but bravely laughs off what most of us couldn't. There were hilarious impressions of her mother having watched the Trisha show, a clever section on plastic surgery and the show ends with an entertaining video starring Mirza in Primark! An opportunity not to be missed and an hour very well spent.
