Shapeshifterz - Queer Dance Class
  • London Fringe

Tired of feeling like a Haute Mess on the dance floor? Wanna get some Femme Fraiche moves and werk your Love Muscle?

Then Shapeshifterz wants you!

Shapeshifterz is your favourite queer dance class, and its back with a vengeance every Tuesday evening at Hoxton Hall! Each week we'll learn a choreo to a cult banger - could be your big Sally Bowles moment, could be Groove Is In The Heart. It's not about hitting every move, it's about moving your body and feeling hot AF. Every class will be something new, so there's no pressure to come every time.

But also, come every time because it's so great! Open to all dance levels, no experience necessary, all glorious intentions welcome! Trans/genderqueer centred teaching style! Trans/genderqueer euphoria!

Sliding scale cost to suit all budgets, whether your purse is Bottom Heavy or you've just got some Loose Change.

Get ready for this dance class Joyride! Bring your Technomates and make some Gal Pals as we cook up a disco Inferno! Trade your dance floor Kaos for some Big Dyke Energy and move like a Monster Queen when you hit the tiles! No matter what the DJ throws at you, could be (Mums Against) Donk, could be Jungle (Kitty), you're gonna Feel It once you've been to Shapeshifterz!

Daniel Perry

Daniel is a Queer dance artist and DJ living in London. Having worked professionally as a dancer since 2013 after graduating from Tring Park School for the Performing arts, they have worked in such west end productions as Mary Poppins, Carousel and most recently Cabaret at Londons Kit Kat club starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley. Along side their work in musical theatre they have worked for artists such as Natalie Imbruglia & Darin, as well as assisting choreograph the musical adaptation of 90s Queer Cult classic But Im a Cheerleader.

Their relationship with dance and movement is intrinsically linked to their love of music and their goal as a teacher is to give folk a deeper understanding of how to connect the two together. They believe movement is a vessel for self expression, a way for us to feel connected to ourselves and those around us, but mostly its a fun form of release, and Shapeshifterz will a space for us to explore all these things together.

Access Information:

Hoxton Hall is fully wheelchair and mobility aid accessible, with a lift servicing all floors. The dance studio is on the ground floor, and is a sprung floor with a mirror wall and windows. The mirror can be covered with a curtain. There are gender neutral toilets on the same floor. On occasion we may use another studio in the building. The nearest station is Hoxton, on the east-London line, which has a lift from the platform to entrance.

The class is led and organised by trans/nonbinary/genderqueer people, who are majority neurodivergent. We want this to be your class and space, and will always try and anticipate and implement accessible practices. Were always open to suggest and recommendations with no fuss.

Dollars and Cents:

This is a non-profit venture. The hire of the room for 90mins costs about 75 - everything beyond that goes towards paying Daniel for teaching the class. In the event of excess income, we will consult with the dance class community about charitable/community donations.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
