Schubert: Schwanengesang
  • Dublin

Acclaimed Irish baritone Owen Gilhooly-Miles and pianist Niall Kinsella collaborate to perform Schubert's iconic final song-cycle, Schwanengesang (Swan-Song). Composed in the final months of his life and published as a cycle after his death, Schwanengesang is often seen as Schubert's final testament to life. Comprising of two groups of songs to poems by Heinrich Heine and Ludwig Rellstab, plus his final song, the poignant 'Die Taubenpost', Schwanengesang's experimental and sometimes avant-garde nature shows us the promise of a hugely-talented composer taken in his prime. Irish Songmakers is delighted to present this performance of Schubert's Schwanengesang, having presented performances of the composer's other two cycles in recent years: Die schne Mllerin in 2020, and Winterreise in 2022. "Gilhooly's performance had a vivid presence, with singing of unflagging perception and energy." - Classical Source on Owen Gilhooly-Miles "Kinsella is a meticulous collaborator." - BBC Music Magazine on Niall Kinsella Irish Songmakers was set up in 2012 to present song recitals with a fresh perspective in Dublin. Since then, Irish Songmakers has presented acclaimed recitals at Dublin Freemasons' Hall, Hugh Lane Gallery, National Concert Hall and Smock Alley Theatre with some of the finest Irish and international artists. www.songmakers.ie "Pianist Niall Kinsella in his Irish Songmakers series has been shaking up the format of the song recital." - The Irish Examiner

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
