Conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Daniil Trifonov return to the International Festival with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for a radiant concert.
Back in 2013, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Daniil Trifonov caused a sensation at the International Festival with their performance of Prokofievs spectacular Third Piano Concerto. The same musicians return this year for a concert full of heartfelt melody and mischievous humour.
Powerhouse Russian conductor Valery Gergiev is a familiar figure to International Festival audiences and conducted his own Mariinsky Opera in Das Rheingold, the first of the Festivals concert performances of Wagners Ring, in 2016. His compatriot Daniil Trifonov is another regular visitor, much admired by Festival audiences for his fiery power, his laser-like focus and his touching sensitivity. Joined by Christopher Hart, the RSNOs Principal Trumpet, they celebrate the fun and frolics of Shostakovichs youthful First Piano Concerto, full of musical jokes and carefree humour.
Gergiev opens the concert with Tchaikovskys sunny Serenade for Strings, radiant music thats full of the composers trademark heart-on-sleeve melodies. They close amid the classical beauty of Stravinskys elegant ballet score Apollon musagte.
