Rob Auton: The Rob Auton Show

The Rob Auton Show is unlike any other stand-up comedy show in existence. As stated on the tin, it is a show about Rob Auton and how he found his place in the world, and how that made him who he is. It’s a very personal performance that mixes comedy with spoken word poetry in an expression of bittersweet nostalgia.

Unlikely that there would be a dry eye left in the auditorium after hearing Rob Auton perform

Standing amongst representations of his other shows, Auton meanders along his various anecdotes about growing up, and how he got to the point where he is now. It’s a very low-key show that calmly celebrates the ordinary and doesn’t rely on ridiculous or embarrassing stories to make us laugh. It's built on the things that just happen that aren't necessarily glamorous or funny, but are a part of life, showing the beauty that can only be found in the human experience. Auton celebrates the ordinary, which encourages us to do the same in our own lives with a kind of contentment that is very aspirational.

It’s the comedy equivalent of mindfulness as the relaxed humour and figure of Auton leads us on a path down memory lane which stops every so often for him to share his short stories with us. He delivers such a rhythmic performance, and you can hear the beats and stresses of the words, combining his voice and creative writing techniques to create a hypnotising atmosphere as the words just wash over us.

Auton’s commitment to the human experience culminates in a really gentle show about innate goodness, ridiculous moments that only life can bring, and taking a chance on people. It's unlikely that there would be a dry eye left in the auditorium after hearing Rob Auton perform.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
