Queering Poetic Form Workshop
  • London Fringe

This workshop is open for all.

In this poetry writing workshop we'll be exploring trans and queer poets' work. How they make and break language 'rules' and use form to say even more. We'll be reading poets including Alok Vaid-Menon, Akwaeke Emezi and Chen Chen, and responding through free writes. Please bring pen/paper/whatever device you like to write on. They'll be time for sharing (if you wish to). Gayathiri's workshops are relaxed, feel free to bring food/drinks/whatever you need to make you feel comfortable in the space.

This workshop is part of our LGBT+ History Month Programme which includes drag makeup workshop & 2 movement based workshops: using movement to connect with the emotional body and a dive into dancehall.

Access:

If you are joining us at this workshop and want to know if our event is accessible for you, drop us an email at [email protected] and well happily give you as much information for you to make an informed decision. Heres some information to get started with:

What to expect?

This workshop will be led by Gayathiri. We will provide a hand out, pens and paper but please feel free to bring your own materials/device to write on. There will be time to share your free writes if you feel comfortable but this is not necessary.

Info on step free access to the space

The workshop will take place in the Society Room at Stanley Arts.

Access for wheelchair users is through the main corner entrance, the first entrance on your right as you are coming up the hill. This entrance is accessed via a ramp and leads into a lobby with automatic doors which in turn leads to a disabled lift. This lift brings you down to the Society Room level. The accessible toilet is behind you on the left as you come out of the lift.

Toilets

There are a mix of gender neutral and gendered toilets at the venue.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
