Queer Diary (Omnibus, Clapham)
  • London Fringe

A handful of brave queer folk take to the mic to re-tell tales from their formative years in the name of nostalgia, solidarity, celebration.

Join us for an evening of earnest journal entries, long-lost love letters, fabulous fan-fiction stories, terrible Tumblr posts, and possibly the odd bit of cringey poetry

At Queer Diary the goths, the punks, the emos, the nerds, the glee-clubbers (and maybe a few populars?) come together as grown-ups, to share our younger selves innermost thoughts. We cant promise to reunite you with your first crush, but we do aim to reignite that rush of adrenaline you got when they first noticed you.

Got something from your teens to share?

Queer Diary is an open-mic event, sign up in advance to share something you wrote in your youth!

If you have questions about how it works, email Beth (host) & Josie (producer) at: [email protected] or see our FAQs.

Often funny, sometimes moving and heart-warming, and always entertaining.

If a Queer Diary event was held on the Moon, the most anti-capitalist queers would be befriending Bezos in hopes of securing a rocket ride.

Queer Diary is hosted by Beth Watson, who will warm up the crowd by sharing some teenage diary entries and chatting to the audience about some of your fave nostalgia moments.

We usually have 2-5 readers per evening, with a breaks where we'll put on our co-curated throwback playlist & for you to enjoy.

Who's it for?:

Any LGBTQIA+ adults can volunteer to read something from their youth on the mic (please read the FAQs & sign-up form for more info).

All LGBTQIA+ people and allies are welcome in the audience.

This is a LGBTQIA+ centred space in a queer-run venue, where all identities are welcome.

CONTENT:

Due to the open mic nature of this event, not all diary readings will be seen by hosts prior to the show.

Readings are from authentic teenage diaries, poetry, etc, so may cover topics such as bullying, internalised homophobia, teenage angst, in line with the coming-of-age theme of the night.

We ask all readers to consider the wellbeing of themselves and audience members when deciding what to share, to avoid sharing material that's likely to be offensive, or very intense/upsetting in themes, and use content warnings wherever material may be sensitive or potentially triggering.

ACCESS:

Readers on stage are asked to describe themselves for blind or visually impaired audience members.

Omnibus Theatre is wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet.

All toilets in the building are gender neutral.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
