Potty the Plant is a campy horror musical with vibrant energy, catchy tunes and a quirky storyline. The star of the show is Potty, a singing, talking and tap-dancing pot plant, who finds itself surrounded by mysterious events at The Little Boo Boo’s Children’s Hospital as children start to go missing on blood test days.
The journey is filled with laugh-out-loud moments
The nurses suspect the wicked Dr. Acula, but can they prove anything? The stakes get higher when the sweetly innocent cleaning lady Miss Lacey falls under his spell. What are Dr. Acula’s real intentions? Could Miss Lacey love a plant instead? And what on earth is gingeritis?
Potty The Plant was originally released in 2017 as an award-winning short film. The hour-long stage musical is produced by Little Big Stack Theatre Company, with two of the original creators still in the cast: Baden Burns, who plays Potty and Sarah Oakland, who plays Miss Lacey. Especially Sarah Oakley must be commended for her beautiful singing and impeccable acting.
The plot unfolds as Potty, alongside the three dysfunctional nurses turned detectives, try to solve the mystery of the missing children. Stephanie Cubello, Zach Burns and Thomas Potts make an energetic nurse team who also power up the songs with great backing vocals and hilarious choreographies.
Each character adds their own charm to the narrative. Nurse Lacey, in her quest for true love, brings a touch of romance, while the suspiciously creepy Dr. Acular keeps the audience guessing with his darkly antics. The interactions between the characters and Potty are pure camp gold.
While the show is undoubtedly a hit, it’s not without minor flaws. The plot gets a bit messy when the characters, including Potty, venture outside the children’s hospital. Also Hudson Tong’s Dr. Acula doesn’t quite cut it as the main baddie compared to previous castings.
Located somewhere between Teletubbies and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Potty the Plant shines with its infectious musical numbers. The annoyingly catchy songs are sure to stick with you long after the final curtain call. The journey is filled with laugh-out-loud moments, thanks to the show’s twisted humour and sharp wit. In short, it’s a fangtastic date!
