See Edinburgh's Sistine Chapel. The former Mansfield Place Church is home to the largest mural scheme by celebrated Arts and Crafts artist, Phoebe Anna Traquair. Painted 1892-1901, the murals reflect the liturgy and beliefs of the Catholic Apostolic Church, as well as the artists' own inspiration. Surfaces are covered with images of all kinds: humans and angels, animals and birds, and patterns above all. A distinctive feature is the use of gilded (gesso) for haloes, harps, trumpets and decorative borders. Take a free guided tour or enjoy exploring at your leisure.
