Phil Nicol: The Naked Racist

Pay attention – you’re going to have to focus carefully to keep up with the Canadian comedy whirlwind that is Phil Nicol, but it will be worth it.

His set starts with a row with his girlfriend that leaves him spending a weekend in Amsterdam by himself, and he uses this to hang out some terrific comedy lines. Delivered at a breakneck pace, his trippy / speedy presentation actually helps build belief in what he’s saying to us.

Definitely not for the politically correct crowd, Phil explains how he ended up making love to a one-legged woman (by mistake). He also managed to come up with an on the spot musical called ‘Fist-a-mong’ which may give you a flavour of what’s happening in the bits that are left in his head not already taken over by the magic mushrooms.

Finally, to the show’s title. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that not much of Phil is left unexplored on stage. Avoid the front row unless you really, really want to make a new friend!

Phil’s whole comedy package went down a storm with the crowd, who rewarded him with a well-deserved standing ovation. Go grab yourself a ticket for an escapist hour of spanking humour from a cracking story-teller.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
