Pete Johansson: Naked Pictures Of My Life

Naked Pictures of my life is a no holds barred look at Pete’s life as he approaches middle age and starts to experience and think about aging. From his wife’s aggressive pregnant demands, to why you should never get a genital piercing, he lays himself bare in this show in the Underbelly. He is by his own admission a slightly chubby, sweaty North American. His wry account of his struggles with his aging body strike a chord with the older folk and a chord of fear in the youngsters. He explores how he has challenged the prejudices his staunch Catholic parents drilled into him, exploring, for example, why he’s ended up working out a gay gym.In less skilled hands the show’s obsession with genitals, sex and farting could end up being offensive, unpleasant testosterone driven stand up. Instead, it’s very funny, with Johansson is laughing at himself, and at the whole of man- and woman- kind. He’s not picking favourites, not trying to prove that men are better than women or vice versa. There’s no trace of misogyny, and it’s clear that he means it when he tells us how much he loves his wife. The audience on Sunday night were loving him, hooting with laughter. He builds an excellent rapport, which allows him to get away with some graphic humour with laid back style. With this standard of debut show, Johansson is sure to become a Fringe favourite, delivering some of the best stand up I’ve seen this year.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.
