A wave of all-male a cappella groups has come to the forefront, appearing in all manner of reality shows including Britain’s Got Talent, which last year featured the Oxford group Out of the Blue. The boys were accorded a huge amount of success and rightly so. Quite simply they are the original and in my opinion, the best.
They can sing, they can dance, they ooze charisma and, let’s face it, they are pretty good-looking too. They burst onto the stage looking dapper in suits and matching ties, but curiously not wearing shoes. Their musical director Nick deserves a huge amount of praise for his ingenious remixes and technical arrangements, but the boys insist that there is no hierarchy - alternating solos and sharing the well-deserved limelight.
Singing a wide variety of songs from ballads and blues to pop and punk (almost), the boys captivate their audience from the very moment they step on stage. Holding the attention of the audience through both the upbeat comedy and the more muted moments is no mean feat and their 50-minute show disappears in the blink of an eye, such is the sheer pleasure of watching these boys perform.
Their enthusiasm for performing is infectious and I failed to see an audience member without a smile on their face and their toes tapping along. I almost wished I had 14 pairs of eyes so I could have watched the expressions on each boy’s face at every moment: they wholeheartedly commit to their performances and this is what makes them so professional. These boys are consummate entertainers and they clearly love what they do. If you get a chance to watch them perform, I guarantee that by the end, if not right from the very beginning, you will love them too.
