Out and About with Linden: The London Book Launch
  • London Fringe

You are invited to attend the London launch of Out and About with Linden: A Queer Archive of the North.

Throughout the 1990s Stuart Linden Rhodes was leading a double life. During the day he was a teacher in the classroom. But as day turned to night Stuart was to be found behind his trusty camera, capturing the goings on in LGBTQ bars, pubs, and clubs across the north of England in Blackpool, Birmingham, Derby, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, York just to name a few.

Now, these images, which were lost for over thirty years, have been found, restored and are to be found in this new handbook book featuring newly written contributions from Mel B, Angie Brown, Julian Clary, Hazell Dean, Nicki French, Paul OGrady, Boy George, David Hoyle, Su Pollard, Heather Small, Denise Welch, Kelly Wilde and the brilliant clubbers and punters who filled the floors of queer venues across the north in the 1990s.

Join us for this truly special and free event at The Glory which will feature Stuart (linden_archives) in conversation with acclaimed London photographer Roxy Lee (@sausageandcustard) an all killer no filler 1990s playlist curated by Adonis and Meat regular Helen Noir (@helennoir) and a special guest appearance by the Liver bird Ms. Sharon Le Grand (@msharonlegrand). All this and the chance to meet Stuart and a free drink upon arrival whilst stocks last!

If you have preordered your book to pick up at the London launch, then we can't wait to give it you. If you haven't preordered a copy there will be a strictly limited number of books as well as the special edition zine, Linden in London, available to buy but please bring cash!

When: Tuesday March 8, 2022, from 7.30pm with Stuart in conversation with Roxy from 8pm.

Where: The Glory (basement bar), 281 Kingsland Road, E2 8AS

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
