On entering the space the audience is presented with four-coloured globes set upon four shiny bar stools. Its a simple design idea which is intriguing and as the lights went down I had no idea what to expect. The four performers entered, picked up the balls and cuddled and fondled them, then seemed to try and present them to the audience before placing them on the floor.
So far, so weird. We were then asked the question do you understand that feeling when you cant quite describe when something isnt right? I do now. I think the basic premise of this piece (I think) is that words are inadequate as a way of expressing a feeling. The example we are given is that feeling one gets after eating a Trebor mint, though why anyone would want to verbally describe that feeling escapes me.
Were then taken on a weird night out by the performers, as they meet a strange man who gives them something (drugs?) and they trip out. These guys are good movers, though the choreography is nothing special, but the basic journey we are taken on sees them take a substance, go to a club, dance to several tracks, come down, get depressed. Not much new there.
Atom Theatres stated intention is to explore the connection between audience and actor, and that their audience mustnt merely understand but feel what the characters feel. The fact that this should be the aim of any performance art, drama included, seems to have escaped them.
Some nice lighting and dancing, but not great value at twenty seven minutes. If you go to a club you can watch better, and watch it all night.
