One Night Stand: An Improvised Musical

Returning after their 2007 sell-out Fringe hit, One Night Stand are back and better than ever. Offering a new musical every night, they promise to make you laugh, cringe and definitely applaud.

Two girls and five guys skip onstage in what is instantly recognisable as an American show opening, but don’t let this put you off. These seven twenty-somethings are some of the most talented individuals at the Fringe. They ask their audience to provide the name of a musical that’s never been made, the title of a song and a starting location, and from these bare bones, they instantly create a show that has never been seen before (and will never be seen again).

I’m not sure how one would go about directing an improvised musical, but whatever Dan Fishbach and Michele Spears are doing, they’re doing it well. The clear stars of the show I saw (The Hairy Mole - a tale of awkwardness and love set at a high school reunion) were Sam Martin and Quinn Beswick who both possess excellent voices and superb comic timing, but the nature of the show means anyone else might shine another night. Few companies at the Fringe know as well as these guys do how to make an audience howl with laughter or burst into spontaneous applause mid-lyric, so start thinking about the musical you want to see.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD

Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
