NOT IN VENICE! The Making of Pinocchio: Digital Edition / Palestine Fundraiser
  • UK Regional & Tours

We would have been presenting the live show of The Making of Pinocchio at the Venice Biennale Theatre Festival this week.

In March we pulled out of the programme due to the Biennale's refusal to exclude the Israel Pavilion, standing in solidarity with the Art Not Genocide Alliance. You can read our full statement on instagram @cademacaskill.

Instead, we are making the digital version of The Making of Pinocchio available to watch online from 20th - 30th June 2024. This is a 75 minute film in English with captions hosted on Vimeo. You can access it by purchasing a pay-what-you-can ticket to receive the link.

We will give half of the money raised to the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children's fund - providing vital medical help to the children of Gaza, and the other half will be split between our team of freelance arts workers who lost out on their fees due to our decision to withdraw in protest of the Biennale's failure to exclude Israel.

THE MAKING OF PINOCCHIO DIGITAL EDITION:

A true tale of love and transition told through the story of Pinocchio.

In this hybrid of theatre and film, shot and edited all in one take in 2021, you are invited to go
behind the scenes of Cade & MacAskills creative process and their relationship, and
question what it takes to tell your truth.

Artists and lovers Rosana Cade and Ivor MacAskill have been creating The Making of
Pinocchio since 2018, alongside and in response to Ivors gender transition. In this digital
edition of the work, their tender and complex autobiographical experience meets the
magical story of the lying puppet who wants to be a real boy.

With an ingenious scenography designed by Tim Spooner, layered with sound by Yas
Clarke, lights by Jo Palmer and cinematography from Kirstin McMahon, the show
employs split-screen, forced perspective and intimate close ups to constantly shift
between between fantasy and authenticity, humour and intimacy, on stage and on
screen.

The Making of Pinocchio joyfully embraces the importance of imagination in queer
worldmaking and the idea of transness as a state of possibility that can trouble fixed
perspectives and inspire change.

The film is captioned including sound descriptions.

There is nudity and some descriptions of transphobia, although the film centres trans love and joy.

Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. We don't want your money to support a hack's bar bill at Abattoir, but if you have a pound or two spare, we really encourage you to support a good cause. If this review has either helped you discover a gem or avoid a turkey, consider doing some good that will really make a difference.

You can donate to the charity of your choice, but if you're looking for inspiration, there are three charities we really like.

Mama Biashara
Kate Copstick’s charity, Mama Biashara, works with the poorest and most marginalised people in Kenya. They give grants to set up small, sustainable businesses that bring financial independence and security. That five quid you spend on a large glass of House White? They can save someone’s life with that. And the money for a pair of Air Jordans? Will take four women and their fifteen children away from a man who is raping them and into a new life with a moneymaking business for Mum and happiness for the kids.

Theatre MAD
The Make A Difference Trust fights HIV & AIDS one stage at a time. Their UK and International grant-making strategy is based on five criteria that raise awareness, educate, and provide care and support for the most vulnerable in society. A host of fundraising events, including Bucket Collections, Late Night Cabarets, West End Eurovision, West End Bares and A West End Christmas continue to raise funds for projects both in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.
